Thyroid Support UK

Practical Support for Your Thyroid Health

Living with a thyroid condition can raise a lot of questions.

What should you eat? Do you need to avoid certain foods? Which supplements are worth considering? How does your diet fit around thyroid medication? And how do you separate useful advice from everything you read online?

At Thyroid Support UK, we provide personalised nutrition and lifestyle guidance to help make everyday thyroid health easier to understand.

Our approach is practical, balanced and built around you.

Supporting You With Thyroid Health

There isn't one single approach that works for everybody living with a thyroid condition.

Your diet, lifestyle, medication, preferences and goals can all be different.

That's why we focus on understanding your individual circumstances before identifying areas where support could be useful.

This can include:

  • Balanced nutrition
  • Meal planning
  • Understanding thyroid-related nutrients
  • Weight-management support
  • Reviewing dietary restrictions
  • Supplement awareness
  • Nutrition alongside thyroid medication
  • Vegetarian and vegan diets
  • Building healthier routines
  • Practical lifestyle changes
  • Developing sustainable habits

The goal isn't to introduce more rules into your life.

It's to help you understand what matters and develop an approach you can realistically maintain.

Making Thyroid Nutrition Simpler

Search for thyroid nutrition online and you'll find an enormous amount of conflicting information.

One source tells you to eliminate gluten. Another recommends avoiding dairy. Others suggest iodine, selenium or specialist thyroid supplements.

It can quickly become overwhelming.

There is actually no specific “thyroid diet” recommended for everyone with a thyroid disorder. The British Thyroid Foundation advises that no particular foods or supplements can be used to treat a thyroid disorder and recommends eating a balanced variety of foods instead.

Our approach starts there.

Rather than concentrating on restrictions, we look at your overall diet and identify practical improvements that are relevant to you.

What Does a Balanced Thyroid Diet Look Like?

You don't necessarily need specialist recipes or unusual ingredients to eat well with a thyroid condition.

A balanced diet can be built around familiar everyday foods.

Depending on your individual dietary requirements, this can include:

Vegetables and fruit
Providing fibre and a broad range of nutrients.

Protein-rich foods
Including fish, eggs, meat, beans, lentils and pulses.

Higher-fibre carbohydrates
Such as potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, oats and wholegrains.

Healthy fats
Including nuts, seeds, olive oil and oily fish.

Dairy or suitable alternatives
Depending on your dietary preferences and requirements.

The emphasis is on the overall quality and variety of your diet rather than searching for individual “thyroid superfoods”.

Support for an Underactive Thyroid

An underactive thyroid, also known as hypothyroidism, means the thyroid isn't producing enough thyroid hormones.

Nutrition doesn't replace appropriate medical treatment for hypothyroidism.

Instead, nutritional support can help you look at the wider picture.

You may want to improve your meals, better understand your nutritional intake, manage your weight or simply develop a healthier routine alongside your prescribed treatment.

The changes that are useful to you will depend on your individual circumstances.

Hashimoto's Support

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune thyroid condition and a common cause of hypothyroidism.

It is also an area surrounded by particularly large amounts of dietary information.

People with Hashimoto's are frequently encouraged online to eliminate multiple foods or begin taking numerous supplements.

We prefer a more considered approach.

Rather than assuming everybody with Hashimoto's should eat exactly the same way, we can look at your existing diet, restrictions and nutritional requirements.

If you've already removed several food groups, we can also consider whether those restrictions are making it harder to maintain a varied and balanced diet.

Thyroid Support and Weight Management

Weight changes can be a concern for people living with an underactive thyroid.

If weight management is one of your priorities, support can focus on your overall eating pattern rather than introducing an extreme diet.

We can consider:

  • Portion sizes
  • Meal structure
  • Protein intake
  • Fibre intake
  • Snacks
  • Drinks
  • Meal preparation
  • Eating routines
  • Overall dietary intake
  • Sustainable habits

The aim is to develop an approach you can continue rather than achieving a short-term change through excessive restriction.

Practical Meal Planning

Nutrition advice isn't much use if it's impossible to follow during a normal working week.

That's why practicality is central to our approach.

You may need breakfasts that take five minutes to prepare.

Perhaps you need lunches that can be made the night before.

You might be cooking for a partner and children and don't want to prepare a separate meal for yourself.

Meal-planning support can take these circumstances into account.

In many cases, you don't need an entirely new collection of “thyroid-friendly” meals. Small improvements to meals you already enjoy can be a much easier place to start.

Understanding Thyroid Supplements

Iodine, selenium, zinc, vitamin D, iron and numerous other nutrients are commonly discussed in relation to thyroid health.

However, a nutrient being important to normal thyroid function doesn't automatically mean you need to take it as a supplement.

The British Thyroid Foundation recommends avoiding excessive supplement doses and notes that supplements aren't an alternative to prescribed medication.

Your existing diet and supplement intake therefore need to be considered together.

Iodine and Thyroid Health

Iodine is required for the production of thyroid hormones, but additional iodine isn't automatically beneficial for someone with a thyroid disorder.

The British Thyroid Foundation advises that people taking levothyroxine for hypothyroidism don't need iodine supplements. It also advises people with existing thyroid conditions to avoid iodine or kelp supplements because they can contain excessive or variable amounts of iodine.

This is one reason why we don't believe in automatically recommending a long list of “thyroid supplements”.

Food, Supplements and Levothyroxine

If you take levothyroxine, your everyday food and supplement routine can be important.

The NHS currently advises taking levothyroxine 30–60 minutes before your first meal or caffeinated drink of the day. It also lists calcium and iron supplements among products that can interact with levothyroxine.

The British Thyroid Foundation additionally notes that soya can interfere with levothyroxine absorption and recommends separating it from the medication.

We can help you understand these nutritional considerations, while medication decisions remain with your GP, endocrinologist or pharmacist.

Do You Need to Give Up Gluten?

Gluten-free diets are frequently promoted for people with thyroid conditions, particularly Hashimoto's.

But having a thyroid disorder doesn't automatically mean you need to stop eating gluten.

People who also have coeliac disease need to follow a gluten-free diet. Outside of circumstances such as diagnosed coeliac disease, food exclusions shouldn't automatically be assumed to improve thyroid disease.

Removing foods unnecessarily can make your diet more restrictive and potentially harder to balance.

What About Dairy?

The same principle applies to dairy.

You don't automatically need to eliminate dairy simply because you have a thyroid condition.

If you don't consume dairy because of your preferences, an allergy, intolerance or another reason, we can look at suitable alternatives and make sure the wider nutritional implications are considered.

Vegetarian and Vegan Thyroid Nutrition

You can also follow a vegetarian or vegan diet while living with a thyroid condition.

However, when particular food groups aren't consumed, it can be useful to consider where important nutrients are coming from.

Depending on your diet, this could include:

  • Protein
  • Vitamin B12
  • Iron
  • Calcium
  • Iodine
  • Selenium
  • Zinc
  • Vitamin D

We look at what you actually eat rather than making assumptions based simply on whether your diet is vegetarian or vegan.

More Than Just Food

Thyroid support doesn't have to revolve entirely around what's on your plate.

Your everyday routine also influences how easy it is to maintain healthy behaviours.

Support can therefore include looking at areas such as:

Planning – making healthier choices easier during busy weeks.

Routine – developing greater consistency around meals and everyday habits.

Movement – finding realistic ways to incorporate appropriate physical activity.

Sleep – establishing a more consistent sleep routine.

Goals – turning broad intentions into achievable actions.

Consistency – creating habits that don't rely entirely on motivation.

These aren't treatments for thyroid disease. They're simply part of looking after your wider health and wellbeing.

A Personalised Approach to Thyroid Support

You shouldn't have to fit your life around a generic health programme.

We work the other way around.

Your support begins with your current lifestyle and looks at the changes that could realistically work within it.

Someone working long shifts will require a different approach from somebody working from home.

A vegetarian may have different nutritional considerations from somebody who eats fish and meat.

Someone looking for weight-management support will have different priorities from someone simply trying to improve their dietary variety.

Your plan should reflect those differences.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is thyroid support?

Our thyroid support focuses on the nutrition, food choices and everyday lifestyle habits surrounding living with a thyroid condition. It complements rather than replaces appropriate medical care.

Is there a special diet for thyroid conditions?

No. There isn't a single specific thyroid diet recommended for everyone with a thyroid condition. A balanced and varied diet is generally recommended.

Can you treat an underactive thyroid?

No. Hypothyroidism requires appropriate medical assessment and treatment. Our service provides complementary nutrition and lifestyle support.

Can you help people with Hashimoto's?

Yes. Support can include reviewing your diet, food restrictions, meal planning, nutritional intake and everyday habits while you continue appropriate medical management.

Do I need to avoid gluten?

Not simply because you have a thyroid condition. Dietary restrictions should have an appropriate individual reason rather than being applied universally.

Should I take thyroid supplements?

Don't assume you need supplements simply because you have a thyroid condition. Excessive amounts of certain nutrients can be harmful or interfere with thyroid function, medication or testing.

Can you help with weight management?

Yes. Support can look at your meals, portions, protein, fibre, snacks, drinks and overall eating habits where weight management is one of your goals.

Are consultations available online?

Yes. Online consultations make personalised support accessible throughout the UK.
